What if you've paid more tax than you needed to?

See what you might be entitled to claim back. Most people paid through PAYE assume their tax is sorted. Most of it is. The part that isn't is the part you have to ask for.

You've done the sensible things. Paid into the pension at work, let payroll handle the tax, trusted the number on the payslip.

None of that was a mistake. It's just that nobody has ever checked your working.

Some tax relief arrives on its own. Some only reaches you if you claim it, and HMRC doesn't send reminders.

Answer a few questions and see which reliefs could apply to you, and roughly what each one is worth.

And the earlier years aren't all lost. You can usually go back four tax years, BUT every 5 April the oldest one closes for good.

So it checks those four years as well as this one.

The Relief Finder

Ten minutes to find out what you may have missed.

  • Every relief that appears to apply, by name. Not a teaser total. Each one, with an estimate of what it's worth.
  • This year and the four before it. Because the earlier years are the ones with a deadline.
  • The breakdown, sent in full. Year by year, with the date each earlier year closes, in your inbox a couple of minutes after you finish.

I spent nearly ten years as a private banker, being paid to spot things in other people's money. And for years I missed about £5,000 a year in my own: two tax reliefs I was owed and never claimed, because I wrongly assumed relief was for people in a different bracket to me. My figure was mine; yours will be different.
